“The trees all singing”, título da exposição, é um verso de Gary Snyder, poeta e defensor de uma ecologia profunda. “As árvores todas cantando”. Mostrados sobre estruturas concebidas especialmente para a ocasião, os trabalhos de Filipa Tojal constituem um convite à meditação, ao silêncio, a um reencontro com essa viridez presente na natureza e em cada ser humano.

Inacabado, fragmentado, esboçado. Se, por um lado, podemos detectar no trabalho de Filipa Tojal estas características, por outro, o seu contrário é também verdade. A obra da artista é acabada, definitiva, sem qualquer dúvida relativamente à sua posição no mundo. Somos nós, espectadores, que temos de resolver o puzzle, o enigma. Cabe a cada um encontrar a resposta para estes pedacinhos de natureza, de arte, feitos com pigmentos sobre papel japonês, tecido cru e papel.

Uma estética do fragmento atravessa esta mostra, que parece surgir de uma arqueologia da paisagem através da qual a artista respiga sobretudo cores, movimentos e tensões, como as mudanças climáticas. A natureza de Filipa Tojal espelha assim a natureza envolvente, com as suas mutações. E vice-versa. Existe aqui uma fenomenologia que aproxima estes trabalhos dos de outros realizados por nome que tem feito da paisagem o principal tema da sua prática artística: João Queiroz, que também irá passar por este ciclo de exposições, na Casa das Artes.

A exposição de Filipa Tojal é percorrida por essa viridez de que nos fala Hildegarda de Bingen. Actualmente a viver no Japão, a artista traduz nas suas obras uma singular experiência da natureza. Cada pintura abraça a paisagem, devolvendo-nos esse gesto de um modo silencioso: nas suas formas abstractas quase se torna possível escutar o restolhar das folhas sopradas pelo vento, nelas vislumbrar a manifestação do sol, o toque de um insecto ou as virtudes da água. É igualmente plausível perceber a qualidade plástica destes trabalhos, por vezes miniaturas, que fazem seus os verbos invadir, tingir e sobrepor.

Num dos “Cânticos do êxtase” escritos por Hildegarda de Bingen encontra-se o responsório “O nobilissima viriditas”, onde se lê: “Ó nobilíssima viridez, que tens raízes no sol e que na imaculada serenidade resplandeces numa roda que nenhuma potência terrestre pode abarcar: tu és circundada pelo abraço dos mistérios divinos. Tu coras como a aurora e ardes como a chama do sol.”

Filipa Tojal (Freamunde 1993) terminou a licenciatura em Pintura na Faculdade de Belas Artes do Porto. Viveu temporariamente em Londres e em Piemonte - Itália, tendo-se mudado para o Japão, onde vive e trabalha desde 2016. É neste momento aluna do mestrado de Pintura na Universidade de Artes de Tóquio. Recorrendo a técnicas sejam ocidentais como orientais e questionando as diferenças entre estes dois mundos, encontra-se presentemente num processo meditativo visual e conceptual tendo como influência poética a natureza e tudo o que a ela pode estar associado. Numa honesta apreciação do universo pictórico da pintura, conceitos orientais como o imperfeito, o incompleto e o impertinente têm influenciado todo o seu trabalho. Expõe ocasionalmente seja em Portugal como no Japão.

You redden like the dawn and you burn: flame of the Sun

"The trees all singing", title of the exhibition, is a verse by Gary Snyder, poet and advocate of a deep ecology. "The trees all singing." Shown on structures specially designed for the occasion, the works of Filipa Tojal are an invitation to meditation, to silence, to a reunion with this “greening force” present in nature and in every human being.

Unfinished, fragmented, sketched. If, on the one hand, we can find these characteristics in the work of Filipa Tojal, on the other hand, their opposite is also true. The artist's work is finished, definitive, without any doubt regarding its position in the world. It’s up to us, spectators, to solve the puzzle, the enigma. It is up to each one of us to find the answer to these little pieces of nature, of art, made with pigments on Japanese paper, raw fabric and paper.

An aesthetics of the fragment crosses this exhibition, apparently emerging from an archeology of the landscape through which the artist gleans mainly colors, movements and tensions, such as climate changes. The nature of Filipa Tojal thus mirrors the surrounding nature, with its mutations. And vice versa. Here, there is a phenomenology that brings these works closer to others performed by an artist that has made the landscape the main theme of his practice: João Queiroz, who will also be present in this cycle of exhibitions, in Casa das Artes.

The exhibition by Filipa Tojal is covered by this “greening force” to which Hildegard of Bingen refers. Currently living in Japan, the artist translates in her works a unique experience of nature. Each painting embraces the landscape, giving us back this gesture in a silent way: in its abstract forms it is almost possible to hear the rustle of leaves blown by the wind, to glimpse in them the manifestation of the sun, the touch of an insect or the virtues of water. It is also plausible to realize the plastic quality of these works, sometimes miniatures, which echo the verbs invade, dye and overlap.

In one of the "Canticles of Ecstasy" written by Hildegard of Bingen there is the responsory "O nobilissima viriditas", where we can read: “O most honored Greening Force,/ You who roots in the Sun;/ You who lights up, in shining serenity, within a wheel/ that earthly excellence fails to comprehend./You are enfolded/ in the weaving of divine mysteries./ You redden like the dawn/ and you burn: flame of the Sun.”

Filipa Tojal (Freamunde 1993) graduated in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Porto. She has temporarily lived in London and Piedmont - Italy, having moved to Japan, where she lives and works since 2016. She is currently undertaking a Masters Degree in painting at the Tokyo University of th Arts. While using techniques that are Western as well as Eastern and questioning the differences between these two worlds, she is currently under a visual and conceptual meditative process having as her poetic influence, nature and all that can be associated with it. In an honest appreciation of the pictorial universe of painting, oriental concepts such as the imperfect, the incomplete, and the impertinent have influenced her work. Exhibits occasionally in Portugal and Japan.
